Your ability scores have modifiers. These are a variable you add to ability checks (d20 rolls, with the total determining to what extent you succeed), saving throws, and attack rolls. In a way, they are the expression of your score.

Tabulate your modifiers once you have created your character: racial bonuses and your class's Ability Score Increases, which unlock at certain levels, can still affect them. Whenever you change an ability score, make sure to check if your modifier increases.
