Expertise is a quasi-supernatural skill. It is usually supplied by class features. You cannot choose proficiency in the same skill twice to get expertise; instead, you have to explicitely gain expertise in a skill. When you gain expertise, you can circle the proficiency marker next to the skill.

If you have expertise in a skill, you can add your proficiency bonus twice to your skill modifier.

Note that it is impossible to have more than expertise (ie, double proficiency) in a skill.
