Imperial Communications RegimentsLore - Organization Canon

87 OW - 98 OW

The Communications Regiments were under-strength support formations of the Ochebanian army, subordinated directly to the new central headquarters (rather than divisional or local noble commands, as was more common).

Following the Snakefolk Crisis, the empire took several measures to improve state power, particularly militarily, with infrastructure, communications, and military reforms. Part of these efforts was the creation of a central headquarters and the gradual nationalization of military units (previously, "divisions" were the highest commands, and this is a very doctrinal term used to describe very localized structures of command which often laid in the hands of landlords). To improve continent-wide military communications immediately, five Communications Regiments were also created.

These were assigned rough territorial responsibilities (hence the name "regiment"), but they were subordinate only to central headquarters in Londerhome, and structured and deployed uniquely. They were specialized in communications, done with horses and rail mail, and in the deployment of tourmaline-based communicators. As a result, the regiments were never deployed as one unit, but rather split up - often into companies of only fifty or so men - to create communication relays and set up the technology in divisional headquarters.

By 92 OW, most regiments were integrated into the communicator network, and they generally had horse messenger companies of their own. The Communications Regiments were slowly phased out, though the central headquarters retained them to deploy where needed to rapidly establish field communications network in deployments (i.e. overseas operations, as the Northern Campaign had a well-structured army). The final one was disbanded in 98 OW, though their principle continued to exist in the form of dedicated communications companies as part of the command support formations, which were particularly numerous among the imperial guards (central headquarters forces).
