Azure Fostering Scholarship ProgrammeLore - Relation Canon
378 OW - 408 OW
The Azure Scholarships were an initiative by members of the Azure Bonds connection to promote women in the armed forces.
Historically, the Fleet had featured a significant minority of female officers, even up to its highest ranks; the famous commander of the fleet in the Korpeonic campaigns, Metena Tuiz, was a woman. The old Fleet traditions were still strong in naval culture, particularly among the members of the Azure Bonds. The connection was quite widespread and powerful, and wanted to take action against the declining number of female senior officers.
It thus established a pooled scholarship programme, financed privately by individual members. The programme was a nationally listed scholarship, and was thus applied to through the national scholarship system. It was restricted to military degrees and women, but did not specifically require students to then become members of the connection (though this was often the case), and did not impose any restrictions beyond the standard selection criteria (primarily poverty thresholds, with performance as a decider).
Each year, 2 - 14 such scholarships were available. These were of the fixed pool type: when a scholarship was granted, a fixed amount of money was placed in a locked account, from which the student could withdraw monthly as long as she was enrolled in university. It was a lump sum, covering the university's tuition and very basic life costs.
The programme weakened after the turn of the century, because the connection itself was less prominent or wealthy. The government struck the scholarship listing as part of a general halving of the scholarship offer in 408 OW.
